Updated November 2026
This Kefalonia guide is for travellers from Norway, Sweden and Denmark who want a Greek island with mountains as well as beaches. Greece is a big draw from the north: Norwegians made 377,000 holiday trips there in 2025, according to the Statistics Norway travel survey. Below you will find how to get there from Oslo, Stockholm, Gothenburg and Copenhagen, when to go, which beaches to know, how to get around and what the Greek stay fee adds. Every fact has a source at the bottom.
Quick answer
- Flights: Norwegian flies direct to Kefalonia from Oslo. From Stockholm, Gothenburg and Copenhagen, plan on a connection, for example via Athens. Check the current schedule before you book.
- Weather: July and August are the hottest and driest months. May and September are milder, with about five rain days each.
- Getting around: a hire car is the easiest way to reach beaches and villages. KTEL buses link the main towns.
- Stay fee: Greece adds a climate resilience fee per room per night. It is higher from April to October.
Why Kefalonia?
Kefalonia is the largest island in the Ionian Sea, according to Visit Greece’s Kefalonia page. Pine, cypress and olive trees cover much of it. On the peaks of Mount Ainos grows the Cephalonian fir, a tree found only in Greece.
Mount Ainos National Park was declared in 1962 by Royal Decree 776/1962. Its main purpose is to protect that fir forest. In the Ionian Islands, the fir grows only on Mount Ainos. On the mountain’s slopes, growers cultivate the vines for Robola, the island’s well-known white wine.
The villages give the island its character:
- Fiskardo in the north is one of the few places on Kefalonia that escaped the 1953 earthquake, so it keeps its older buildings.
- Assos is a quiet fishing village with a Venetian castle.
- Argostoli is the capital and the main town for shops and services.
- Lixouri, across the bay from Argostoli, has traditional architecture.

Kefalonia beaches

The beaches of Kefalonia (Visit Greece) range from famous postcard bays to quiet coves. Visit Greece describes these:
- Myrtos: one of the most photographed beaches in Greece, with white pebbles and deep turquoise water.
- Antisamos, near Sami on the east coast: green hills meeting blue water.
- Xi, in the south: reddish sand and clay cliffs.
- Skala: suited to families and water sports.
- Makrys and Platis Gialos, near Argostoli: shallow water and good facilities.
- Koroni, near Lourdas: calm water and an important habitat for loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta).
If you swim near Koroni, keep your distance from nesting areas and follow local signs.

Where to stay

Visiting Kefalonia for a week or two? Your base depends on the trip you want. The island is large, so the place you sleep decides how far you drive each day.
- The north (Fiskardo and Assos): small harbour villages, older buildings and a quieter pace. You will drive further to the southern beaches.
- Argostoli and around: the capital has shops, restaurants and services, and the shallow beaches of Makrys and Platis Gialos are close by.
- The east (Sami): close to Antisamos and the ferry port.

What does Kefalonia cost?
Is a Kefalonia holiday expensive? It depends on season, area and how you travel. Prices for flights, rooms and cars move with demand, so compare your own dates with the tools above. We do not quote meal, taxi or rental prices, because we have no dated official source for them.
One cost is fixed by law. Greece charges a climate resilience fee on stays. It replaces the old accommodation tax and applies per room or apartment per night, according to the Greek tax authority AADE. The rates are set in Law 5177/2025, article 44:
| Type of stay | April–October | November–March |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel, 1–2 stars | €2 | €0.50 |
| Hotel, 3 stars | €5 | €1.50 |
| Hotel, 4 stars | €10 | €3 |
| Hotel, 5 stars | €15 | €4 |
| Rented furnished rooms and apartments | €2 | €0.50 |
| Short-term rental | €8 | €2 |
| Short-term rental, detached house over 80 m² | €15 | €4 |
Rates per room or apartment per night, checked 2 November 2026. Rates can change; see the AADE FAQ on the climate resilience fee.
Example: seven nights in a 4-star hotel in July adds 7 × €10 = €70 per room. Ask your host whether the fee is in the price or charged on arrival.
Health cover and safety
Bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Helsenorge on the EHIC says the Norwegian card gives you the right to necessary care on temporary stays in EU/EEA countries, on the same terms as local residents. Swedes order the card from Försäkringskassan, and Danes use the blue EU health card from the Danish authorities; check your own country’s agency before you travel.
In Greece, the European Commission’s page on using the EHIC in Greece says to go to public health centres, public (ESY) hospital outpatient services or private doctors contracted with EOPYY, the national health fund. Show your EHIC and ID. Without the card, an ESY consultation costs €20.
The EHIC does not cover the trip home if you fall ill. Get travel insurance as well. Staying for months? Read our health insurance guide for Scandinavian expats.
Before you go, check your foreign ministry’s travel advice for Greece.
More Greek islands and trips
If this Kefalonia guide has you thinking about a wider Greek trip, the ferry links make it easy to combine islands. Greece has about 6,000 Greek islands and islets, and 227 of them are inhabited, so Kefalonia is one choice among many. Lefkada and Zakynthos are a ferry ride away.
